3 Cavs that could lose a roster spot to Summer League standouts: Dylan Windler

SL standout: RJ Nembhard

There is no direct replacement for Dylan Windler waiting on the Cavs, either on the roster or on this Summer League team. The Cavs continue to struggle to find 3-and-D players with real size; Dean Wade is the closest approximation but is more of a 4, and their collection of wings are best deployed at the 2 – players like Isaac Okoro, Cedi Osman and the newly-drafted Ochai Agbaji.

On the one hand, that bodes well for Windler’s chances at sticking around. He is the path to a player type they truly need and don’t have. That being said, he’s also the most likely candidate to get dumped to another team to free up a roster spot. Windler’s development, marred by injuries, hasn’t taken off and he might just need a new setting in which to try and take that step forward.

If the Cavs do free up a spot on the 15-man roster, RJ Nembhard is a prime candidate to fill it. He is currently signed to a two-way deal, but the Cavs could promote Nembhard and sign another Summer League standout to his two-way slot, whether from the Cavs or elsewhere.

Nembhard has been the best scoring threat on the Cavs and one of the better ones thus far in Las Vegas. His 19.5 points per game ranks inside the Top 20 in all of Summer League, and he is tied for 10th in minutes as he has been the primary engine for the Cavs this summer. His shot has been falling, he has showed some zip off the bounce, and overall he is a prime candidate to develop into the Cavs’ third point guard.

We didn’t even mention the solid passing of Isaiah Mobley, the finishing of Amar Sylla or the foul-drawing of Cam Young. The Cavs have had a number of standout players in Las Vegas Summer League, and there are at least three players on the roster whose spots are a little less secure than they were a week ago.
