Who is on Cavs’ Summer League roster? The Guards

Player to Know: RJ Nembhard

Not to be confused with Andrew Nembhard, of no known relation, Ruben “RJ” Nembhard Jr. is a combo guard who went to Texas Christian University before going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft. He played Summer League last summer for the Miami Heat before signing a training camp deal with the Cavs. That was converted into a two-way deal just prior to the start of the season, and he just signed a new two-way deal in the past week.

Nembhard played a very small role with the Cavs last season when backcourt injuries struck, appearing in 14 games but for just 63 total minutes. His role with the Cleveland Charge was much more expansive; in the regular season, he averaged 24.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. This Summer League will be important to build on if he wants a shot at making the full roster later in the year. If not, he will be forced to move on as a player can only be a on a two-way with a team for two years.

Other Guards: Ashton Hagans, Amauri Hardy

Ashton Hagans is a long guard defender out of Kentucky who doesn’t have enough offensive juice to hang on in the league. If he can find a way to improve his outside shot he could make a run at a Gary Payton-like spot in the league, as his defensive playmaking and passing ability are very strong.

Amauri Hardy will probably end up best known as the older brother of Jaden Hardy, a highly-recruited prospect who was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in this year’s draft. Amauri signed with the G League Ignite out of college after four unremarkable years in college and played a small role on the team this past year, well behind players like Jaden and Dyson Daniels in the rotation. He is more a body than a real shot at an NBA prospect.
