Free agents 25 or under for Cavs to pursue: Donte DiVincenzo

Donte DiVincenzo proved his value to the Milwaukee Bucks in multiple postseasons, a two-way guard who is dynamic in the open court, with ball-handling, athleticism and shooting. He held up on defense and could guard 1s or 2s. He’s not a star, but he is a very solid player.

Unfortunately, DiVincenzo missed the Bucks’ run to the title due to an injury, and when he returned he wasn’t the same player. He turned it on for the Sacramento Kings after he was traded last February, but for some reason or another they declined to extend him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

If Collin Sexton is re-signed to stay in Cleveland, there probably isn’t enough money or impetus to add DiVincenzo when the Cavs already have Caris LeVert, Isaac Okoro and now Ochai Agbaji. That’s too many shooting guards, and DiVincenzo doesn’t quite have the playmaking chops to be a full-time 1. If Sexton is back, the Cavs also would be limited to their taxpayer mid-level exception, starting at $6.4 million; he is likely looking for more.

If Sexton joins another team, either via sign-and-trade or by the Cavs declining to match an offer sheet, DiVincenzo would be a tantalizing replacement. He isn’t the explosive scorer that Sexton is, but he can fill it up, and is a comparable (or better) shooter and much better passer. In short, he fits better as a role player that Sexton. DiVincenzo could be this team’s long-term starter at the 2 or a Sixth Man once Ochai Agbaji grows into the role.
