3 winners on the Cavs roster from the 2022 NBA Draft: Brandon Goodwin
Brandon Goodwin is not currently on the Cavs’ roster. Coming off of a two-way contract, he is a restricted free agent with a two-way tender. If another team tries to add Goodwin to a two-way, the Cavs would be able to match; that being said, as Goodwin enters his fifth season in the league he is ineligible to go back on a two-way, so if he sticks he will need a spot on the full roster.
Goodwin showed real flashes of being an NBA player last season, called into inconsistent duty amidst a cacophony of injuries to the team’s backcourt. He played in 36 games, starting five, including a 21-point outing against the New Orleans Pelicans and 17 points and 12 assists while starting for Darius Garland against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
If Cleveland saw enough from Goodwin last season to add him as the third point guard, Goodwin wouldn’t have to risk the open market and potentially be stuck heading overseas or playing in the G League full-time. That possibility would be dashed if the Cavs took a point guard in the NBA Draft. They did not, but perhaps they would have if Kennedy Chandler had not gone one pick ahead of them in the second round.
In not taking a point guard, the Cavs all but guaranteed they will not be using a significant resource to add a third point guard. That could pave the way for Goodwin to stick around. It’s far from a guarantee, but he has cleared the first hurdle. Next up: free agency.
