Eastern Conference NBA Draft Grades: Atlanta Hawks

Picks: AJ Griffin, Forward, Duke (16); Tyrese Martin, Wing, UConn (51)

The Atlanta Hawks are apparently trying to uproot their entire roster around Trae Young, reportedly getting into the mix for Rudy Gobert, for DeAndre Ayton, for Dejounte Murray and more. That meant they could add a player at almost any position, but perhaps their greatest need at the 3 was what they filled when AJ Griffin slipped all the way down to them.

There are unanswered questions about his medicals and whether something concerning about his knees scared teams off, but there is no denying his talent. He is a flamethrower from outside and has upside to be more if he regains all of his athleticism. Young should be able to set him up for all sorts of outside shots. Griffin was ninth on my board so this was incredible value.

The Hawks picked up some cash to trade down from 44, adding a solid do-it-all wing in Tyrese Martin at 51. Like most players in this range his shot is the swing skill, but if he can hit the 3-pointer at a league-average rate his physical brand of defense and offensive rebounding will help the Hawks.

Grade: B+
