3 factors that will determine if Pistons trade for Sexton: Jerami Grant

It’s no secret that the Pistons are shopping Jerami Grant, the one true top-level veteran on the roster that is drawing interest from other teams. It’s possible, if not likely, that a trade materializes in the lead-up to the draft or on draft night itself.

Who the Pistons get back for Grant will go a long ways towards deciding their priorities in the rest of free agency. If Grant goes to another team for draft capital and matching salary, that’s good news for Sexton. If he goes to the Phoenix Suns for DeAndre Ayton or the Atlanta Hawks for John Collins, even better as the Pistons will have even more of a backcourt need.

What if he goes to a team that sends back a guard? Or what if another team takes him into enough cap space that the Pistons now make a run at Jalen Brunson? Right now they have the need for an on-ball guard and the financial flexibility to add him, but a roster move like trading your most expensive player can change things around in a hurry.

The Pistons can sign Sexton outright or put together salary for a sign-and-trade; they could even work out a deal with the Cavs to send Grant there, with Sexton and some draft capital heading back to the Pistons. Grant is a big enough piece that his movement will cause meaningful ripples through the team and its plans.
