3 potential high upside targets for Cavs in 2nd round of 2022 NBA Draft
MarJon Beauchamp would just make sense in the second round
The last prospect that the Cavs could grab in the second round is a bit of a surprise to me. MarJon Beauchamp had a solid season in the G-League, showing flashes of explosion and defensive dominance. However, I did not think he would slip into the second round. Well, in Boone’s latest mock he has the San Antonio Spurs grabbing Beauchamp with the 38th overall pick, one ahead of the Cavaliers.
This leads me to believe that Beauchamp might actually be sliding on draft boards, and could realistically be there for the Cavs at 39. If he’s not, they should move heaven and earth to find a way to draft him.
In my opinion the Cavaliers need to add a great scorer with the 14th overall pick. But, many scouts and NBA pundits around the league seem to believe that Cleveland may be looking to add a prospect like Jeremy Sochan or Tari Eason. Both are “tweeners” and would fit the modern NBA. That said, why would you waste a lottery selection on Eason or Sochan, when it’s very possible you could get Beauchamp in the second round?
Beauchamp is a very explosive, athletic forward. He excels on the defensive end with his lateral quickness and lockdown perimeter defense. On the offensive end, he needs to improve his shooting. If he can find a way to hit the occasional outside shot, while also getting into passing lanes to force turnovers, he could be a perfect fit with this Cavalier roster.
If the shot comes around, he could be another prospect with high upside, too, for what it’s worth, given Beauchamp’s defensive abilities and athleticism.
Just like I said last week, at this point in the NBA offseason, we really don’t know teams’ true intentions in the draft. Regardless, in my opinion, the Cavs need to spend their first-round pick on a wing who can shoot from deep, and create shots for teammates.
The idea that a guy like Beauchamp or Braun could be in play at 39 should have Cleveland’s front office salivating, considering they are in a great position to add a scoring wing, while also still improving on the defensive end.
