Creating the Cavaliers’ perfect 2022 NBA Draft pick
Chet Holmgren’s upside
Depending on who you ask, there are about 15 or so players in the 2022 NBA Draft that can claim to have the highest upside. For me, it’s pretty simple. For as long as I’ve been watching basketball, I’ve simple never seen a prospect as unique as Chet Holmgren. Despite that, Victor Wembanyama will take over that mantle next summer. For right now though, Holmgren clearly has a lot of things going for him.
He’s a true 7-footer, with a 7’6″ wingspan, he’s a very efficient scorer from all three levels, and has one of the better shooting strokes in the entire draft. On the defensive end of the court, he’s the ultimate rim protector. Cavs fans were treated to a block party by Evan Mobley this past season, well whoever takes Holmgren will get to enjoy watching a swat soiree this season.
There really isn’t anyone to compare Holmgren to in recent memory, but his offensive game has been likened to Dirk Nowitzki’s, which is impressive. However, it’s not unwarranted. His field goal percentage this past season was 12th in the nation, and his three-point percentage was 39%, which is unheard of for a prospect of his size. However good Holmgren can be on the offensive end, he has a chance to be even better on the defensive side of the court.
A lot of scouts might seemingly say that Shaedon Sharpe might have the highest upside, or maybe Dyson Daniels. Regardless, I chose Holmgren’s upside because of how good he can potentially be on defense. Even though it’s a lofty comparison, there’s reason to believe Holmgren could have the type of impact Hakeem Olajuwon did in his heyday. With the Cavaliers counting there defense as the main reason for their success, adding a guy with possibly the highest defensive upside in NBA history would definitely be a win for the front office.
As soon as I finished that last paragraph, I came back to reality for a bit. Even though it would be incredible if Koby Altman could just press a button, and on June 23, when the Cavs are on the clock, the prospect I just described magically appeared. However, that is not the case. Still, there are a lot of prospects that I’ve talked about over the last month that have some of these qualities.
No matter how you slice it, the Cavs have the chance to draft a very good player on draft night at #14, in relation to the first round in this case.
