Player #2 – Mark Williams, Center

Mark Williams is a tremendous player, winning ACC DPOY this year. He also was one of the best big men in the whole nation this year. Why would I not want to take Williams? Personally, I don’t think the Cavs should take Williams because of his offense.

Sure, he’s a menace on defense, don’t get me wrong. But on offense, he’s more of a pick-and-roll roller and lob threat. Offensively, he has no real 3-point range, not shooting any 3’s in college.

The Cavs already have two premier rim-protectors in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and neither of them are especially gifted long range shooters. Sure, Mobley can hit the occasional 3-pointer, but he doesn’t really take a lot of those, and isn’t a knockdown shooter; that’s a clear area where he’ll need to improve.

A backup big man would be nice to have, as Cleveland doesn’t have any backup big men besides Kevin Love, who is more of a power forward. Perhaps Moses Brown could end up being brought back, however, he still has a ways to go offensively as well, and is very foul-prone.

Mark Williams is slated to go a little after the lottery selections are over it seems, so Williams might be on board when the 14th pick is around. That said, I don’t really think he is the best available fit and prospect for the 14th overall pick. Who will that be? I’m not sure, but it seems like it could potentially be Malaki Branham from Ohio State. I personally do have questions about Branham, though.
