NBA Draft Big Board 2.0: No. 1-3

1. Jabari Smith, Forward, Auburn

These top three bigs form a distinct tier for me; all have elite strengths and muted weaknesses. Jabari Smith claims the top spot because of his combination of defense and shooting. 6’10” players with his shot tend to be turnstiles on defense; that he also brings elite length and movement on the defensive end makes him a special prospect.

2. Paolo Banchero, Forward, Duke

The most valuable skill in a star player is on-ball creation, and no one does it better in this draft class than Paolo Banchero. He is a sublime shot creator with excellent strength and touch around the basket and a smooth jumper, especially in the midrange. He’s also a very underrated passer, not just from the elbow but while driving as well. He needs to round out his 3-point shot and defensive agility, but he’s an elite prospect and worthy of a top pick.

3. Chet Holmgren, Center, Gonzaga

The analytical darling of this draft class, Chet Holmgren is an enigma. On the one hand, his rim protection is incredible, he can handle exceptionally well for a seven-footer and has a smooth outside shot. He is also rail-thin at 195 pounds; that’s the same as Tyler Herro. He could be a Hall of Famer with his unique combination of skills; he could also be perennially injured and unable to add weight and strength to his frame and effectively flame out of the league. It’s far more likely than not that he is a great player, which is why he is third; but the massive unknowns with a player of his build do drop him to third as well.
