3 potential trades from Collin Sexton’s reported suitors: Washington Wizards
The theme of these three teams and their interest in Collin Sexton boils down to the presence of larger playmakers in the starting lineup. That covers up for Sexton’s weakness as a passer and allows him to thrive as an attacking scorer while being able to defend the opponent’s smallest player in return.
The Washington Wizards continue their search for a point guard to play alongside Bradley Beal in the backcourt, a problem ever since John Wall began his injury-induced spiral. Russell Westbrook was a wild ride, and Spencer Dinwiddie looked like a bad fit before he was flipped for Kristaps Porzingis.
Now they are taking a swing at Sexton, an offense-first player who would be absolutely nasty attacking advantage situations created by Beal. The two would not be particularly stout defensively, but the Wizards at least have a collection of solid defenders at the frontcourt positions.
Speaking of, a couple of them would be heading back to the Cavs. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope won a title as a starter for the Los Angeles Lakers, the quintessential 3-and-D wing who could play at the 2 or the 3; “KCP” shot 39 percent from deep last season as a full-time starter. Added into the deal to make the salaries work and provide extra value to the Cavs is Corey Kispert, a 2021 Draft pick who profiles as a knockdown shooter at either forward position and would be an excellent addition to the rotation.
The most likely scenario continues to be that the Cavs and Sexton get things figured out and he stays in Cleveland; the team loves him. Yet it’s a very real possibility that contract talks stall, in which case any of these three teams can put together compelling packages to trade for Sexton.
