3 potential trades from Collin Sexton’s reported suitors: Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have been mentioned in conversations about Collin Sexton for a year now, and the fit certainly makes sense. They have a “big” point guard in Cade Cunningham, which frees them up to find a point-guard-sized player who doesn’t have to bear the primary playmaking load. Starting Sexton, Cunningham and Saddiq Bey across the three perimeter positions makes for a collection of complementary skillsets.

A deal with the Pistons could be difficult because they have the cap space to sign Sexton outright; they will want to do a sign-and-trade so that Cleveland won’t match, but they have increased leverage. Even so, Jerami Grant is rumored to be very available, and perhaps swapping Grant for Sexton could be the basis for a deal.

There would need to be extra compensation heading Detroit’s way, but that gets a little difficult. The Cavs can’t do a sign-and-trade and include their first-round pick this season because that would indicate tampering before NBA Free Agency officially begins. They could include a future first-round pick, but that’s a lot of future being mortgaged from Cleveland.

Isaac Okoro therefore joins the deal as the sweetener, perhaps worth a late-first in value right now. The Pistons gain a tough defender still working on his perimeter game and that high-powered combo guard that they want to pair with Cunningham. Cleveland gets a rangy forward with some shot creation skills and plenty of defensive chops.
