3 potential trades from Collin Sexton’s reported suitors
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a fairly significant decision to make this summer. Last season the team surged ahead in the standings, doubling their win total from the year before, and Darius Garland was named an All-Star in just his third season. Yet his breakout came in the absence of Collin Sexton, who went down in the eleventh game of the season with a knee injury.
Sexton is now a restricted free agent and is due for a new deal. A proven scorer, Sexton and his camp are angling for a lucrative contract. The Cavs want to keep him around, but if they re-sign Sexton to $20 million per season or more, they will be committing significant money to a very small, defensively-challenged backcourt. Historically, teams don’t go deep in the playoffs with two small guards both starting.
The Cavs have to decide whether to re-sign Collin Sexton or let him free. If available, what trade packages could his suitors put together?
That has led to speculation that Sexton could be acquired in a sign-and-trade, and a number of teams are interested. Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reported this week that the New York Knicks are unlikely to pursue Sexton, but that three other teams are interested: the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.
Let’s put together potential trade packages for each of the teams. We are doing so with a few guidelines in mind: first, Collin Sexton is a free agent, not under contract, so the trade packages coming back to the Cavs are a bit muted. Second, we are assuming a four-year, $25 million deal for Sexton; he may get less than that, but the idea is Sexton is ok going elsewhere because they paid up.
Finally, the combination of the Cavs looking ready to try competing in the Eastern Conference and the teams interested all being deep in the lottery now and possibly moving forward, the trade packages are centered around veterans and not draft capital.
