Mock Draft 2.0: Highlighting team needs for the lottery
Team Needs: Starting forward, reserve forwards
The San Antonio Spurs have their first home-grown All-Star since Kawhi Leonard, with Dejounte Murray taking a huge leap forward this year. Alongside him they have a handful of options at the 2-guard, including Devin Vassel and Joshua Primo. At the other end of the spectrum, Jakob Poetl is a bruising interior defender and long-term option at the 5. If the Spurs are going big-game hunting for a future starter they will likely target a forward who can play with Keldon Johnson.
Sochan’s lack of a shot is troubling, but the Spurs are an organization with a track record of improving that particular weakness. Otherwise, he plays hard, is an excellent defender and does all of the little things. Staying home in Texas to give the Spurs another blue-chip prospect makes sense for both parties, even if the Spurs will need to figure out shooting somewhere else.
Team Needs: Point guard, small forward, backup guards
The Washington Wizards get yet another swing at improving the roster around Bradley Beal, who continues to stick around and could sign a max offer with the Wizards again this summer. Kristaps Porzingis played well down the stretch after a midseason trade, and he can be backed up and play alongside some combination of Daniel Gafford, Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija.
That leaves the 1 and the 3 to officially fill. There are options at the 3, including Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Corey Kispert, although one or more could certainly be moved. Dyson Daniels would fill the team’s most acute need at point guard, a long defender with great passing skills who can help Beal and Porzingis maximize their position on the court.
