Honestly, what’s not to like about Mathurin? The Pac-12’s Player of the Year has good size and length, especially for today’s NBA.
He doesn’t have the quick-twitch ability as Hardy does, but he’s still very explosive and has a strong upper body, that allows him to finish strong at the rim. His shooting stroke is quick and compact, allowing him to get the ball in the air quickly. He’s a good not great isolation scorer, but it’s a part of his game that will undoubtedly get better. He uses his upper body to help him get separation for his mid-range game, which is pretty impressive.
On the defensive end, he has all the traits to be a good perimeter defender. His 6’9″ wingspan allows him to get into passing lanes, and into the open floor, where he definitely plays above the rim. His handles need to be refined, but in tight spaces, he’s actually impressive for a player his size.
Surprisingly, Mathurin doesn’t need to add much bulk, as he’s pretty filled out for a wing. However, more bulk will come, and with that, the strength to become a powerful finisher at the rim.
He wasn’t the most efficient shooter in the country, but he was consistent. He hit the deep ball at a 37% clip, which is not quite on-par with AJ Griffin or even Agbaji, but he makes up for it with his mid-range game. As for creating his own shot, like I said his mid-range game is solid, and will improve.
As far as playmaking, he isn’t going to overly impress you with his passing or vision, but he makes plays when he’s on the court. On top of all of that, he’s a very good rebounder for a wing of his size.
