3 free agent point guards who could return to the Cavs: Kyrie Irving

Dozens and dozens of articles have been written in the past year about the possibility of LeBron James returning to The Land. His own cryptic way of communicating, Cleveland hosting the All-Star Game, the success of the Cavs vs the disappointment of the Los Angeles Lakers — it all combined to create a media maelstrom.

Yet another former Cavaliers star is actually going to be a free agent this summer, and no one is discussing the possibility of a reunion with Kyrie Irving. He was awesome growing up with the Cavs, a young guard exploding into the All-Star Game early on. He was a four-time All-Star with the team and hit the biggest shot in franchise history in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals.

Could the Cavs consider reuniting with Irving? No, almost certainly not. For one, the Cavs have the new version of a young point guard in Darius Garland who is on a trajectory to be at least as good as Irving was. He would be expensive, requiring either moving multiple players to teams with cap space or executing a sign-and-trade with the Brooklyn Nets. On top of that…well, the Cavs have a good thing going with their team culture, and Irving is one of the most unreliable stars in the entire league. He isn’t worth the headache.

There are ways to talk yourself into it. He is absolutely talented, and even at age 30 few players have his isolation scoring chops. He and Garland would be nearly impossible to stop on offense if Irving buys into a free-flowing system instead of my-turn-your-turn basketball. He has playoff and championship experience, something most of this roster lacks.

It’s not happening, but because of his talent and his history with the franchise, the topic will come up over the coming months. Looking at these three options suggests a reunion with any former Cavs point guard is unlikely to happen this summer, at least through free agency. How the Cavs do address this need may go a long way towards deciding their success next year.
