3 free agent point guards who could return to the Cavs
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a backup point guard problem. They had one two seasons ago, when an injury to a young Darius Garland in the midst of a lost season saw players signed to 10-day contracts playing and even starting at the point. The Cavs looked to address that this past season by trading for a reliable veteran in Ricky Rubio.
Rubio was tremendous as Garland’s backup and occasional partner on the court, but an ACL tear ended his season in December. That sent the Cavs into another injury-driven spiral at the position, especially when Garland missed time a few weeks later. Denzel Valentine, Kevin Pangos, Brandon Goodwin, RJ Nembhard and eventually Rajon Rondo all saw time manning the point when Garland was off the court.
The Cavs have to address backup point guard this summer. Which three available PGs could return to the Cavs this summer in free agency?
The rise of Garland into an All-Star player means 34-36 minutes a night at the position are spoken for, yet it is crucial the Cavs figure out the right solution behind him. The best version of that solution is a player who can also handle enough minutes to share the court with Garland, allowing him to leverage his offball skills to maximize the team’s offense.
There are a number of ways the Cavs can address the position, from the NBA Draft to trades to free agency. In evaluating the potential options, a number of former Cavaliers showed up on the free-agent list. In order from most to least likely, which former players could return to the Cavs this summer in free agency?
