How Moses Brown can help the Cavs with their rebounding woes
There is a reason Moses Brown was available to be signed to a 10-day contract. He has a lot of flaws as a player and does not boast a lot of skill level. There is hope Brown might stick around and can be a developmental player for the Cavs, but they aren’t signing some fully-formed beast at center.
What they are getting is an athletic, high-energy big who attacks the glass with relish. Last season during his “breakout” with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the former UCLA player had a total rebounding percentage of 21.6, a number that would have ranked 5th among all players last year if he had played enough minutes to qualify for the leaderboard. This season his number dipped only to 19.9 percent, which would lead the current Cavs roster by a significant margin.
That goes especially so for the defensive glass, which he would outpace even Kevin Love’s impressive number to lead the team. His best skill is something the Cavs struggle with, and he can immediately come in and help shore up that weakness. If he can display enough offensive aptitude to survive, he could secure a rest-of-season contract and stick around.
Moses Brown won’t save this team and he isn’t a full replacement for Jarrett Allen. Yet his best skill is something the Cavs sorely lack, and he should come in hungry to prove himself and not get ushered out of the league. Let’s see what happens for the young big.
