The Cavs 5-man lineup that is dominating opponents

The Cavs’ dominant 5-man lineup: 2. Halfcourt Offense
One of the keys to the offensive efficiency of this 5-man lineup has been its organization and patience. Per NBA.com tracking, this lineup is playing at a pace of just 96.07 possessions per game – a mark that would rank second-to-last in the league this year. Despite this, they have an eFG% of 62.0 percent – more than six percentage points ahead of first place in the NBA; so this group has been generating quality shots.
With endless variations of actions involving Garland and Allen, surrounded by shooting and ball movement, this lineup bends defenses. Wade and Okoro have improved putting the ball on the floor and attacking/continuing the possession when teams close out. Mobley mixes up pick-and-pops with occupying the dunker’s spot, challenging opponents to deal with Garland and Allen with 2-man coverages. Help too much and the Cavs’ prized rookie feasts on lobs.
Cleaning the glass (subscription required) backs up the eye test too: in the halfcourt, this lineup jumps to 77th percentile in the NBA – by far a team-best for 5-man units which have played 100 possessions or more. Everyone moves in sync. It’s purposeful and calculated. If a play breaks down, things start again. It’s lots of fun to watch.
