3 G-League standouts the Cavs could sign: Tacko Fall
This name should look familiar. Prior to this season the Cleveland Cavaliers brought impossibly-tall center Tacko Fall into training camp, and he ended up hanging around on a two-way contract to start the season. He appeared in 11 games, making one start, and scored 12 total points with 23 rebounds and six blocks in his 59 minutes of action.
Then injuries to the backcourt struck, and the Cavs needed to secure a spot for Brandon Goodwin to help at point guard. That meant saying goodbye to Fall, who was waived and has been playing for the Cleveland Charge ever since. In his 10 games in the G League he is averaging 12.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game in just 27.3 minutes.
The dire need at point guard has passed, with Rajon Rondo and Goodwin on hand and Caris LeVert a capable fill-in for ball-handling duties. With Pangos waived, the Cavs could convert Goodwin to a rest-of-season contract and sign Fall back to that second two-way spot.
Fall doesn’t offer a lot of upside, but if the Cavs don’t find someone they like better on the buyout market, adding Fall would give them a big man who knows the system and can fill spot minutes down the stretch if Jarrett Allen misses time. He’s also a useful situational player to have on the roster, a player who can go into the game to guard inbounders or secure free-throw rebounds. It’s not glamorous, but it’s something.
Whether the Cavs elect for passing, scoring or size, there are options available in the G League. The options are slimmer than usual, with the midseason COVID-19 outbreak seeing a lot more players churn through the NBA already, but there are talented players who could help the Cavs, either this season or beyond.
