3 G-League standouts the Cavs could sign: Anthony “Cat” Barber

The NC State Wolfpack has endured years of mostly mediocre play in the middle of the ACC, generally never competing at the top but also not scraping the very bottom. One of their most exciting players of the last decade was point guard Anthony “Cat” Barber.

Barber has been a G League mainstay since before Gatorade rebranded it from the NBA Development League, going undrafted in 2016 and floating around the NBA’s minor league ever since. He went back and forth between various G League squads and teams overseas. This season he is in the G League and putting up solid numbers, good enough to even get a cup of coffee with the Atlanta Hawks and finally appear in his first three NBA games this season.

In the G League Barber has been playing for the College Park Skyhawks and absolutely balling out. His 23.9 points per game ranks 10th in the league among qualified players, and his 8.7 assists per game ranks second. He is a pest on defense, willing to pick up opposing guards full-court and quick to flash his hand into the cookie jar and come away with the ball.

If the Cavs want to add another point guard to replace Pangos, Barber could be a great option for a couple of 10-day contracts in the coming weeks. If he balls out, the team can make a decision between he and Brandon Goodwin. At worst they will have a hard-working lead guard who passes and defends, and who is shooting 46.9 percent from deep this season. That’s a solid player to give an audition to.
