This season has been a fun for Cleveland Cavaliers fans, as the club is finding themselves back in the thick of the postseason picture again at 35-23, and fourth in the Eastern Conference, and the team has two All-Stars. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen that, and this go-round, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen will both be repping the Cavaliers in the All-Star Game.
Garland was initially chosen as an Eastern Conference reserve, whereas Allen is James Harden’s All-Star injury replacement.
Even still, Allen, who has had a career year this season with Cleveland, is more than deserving of an All-Star nod, as he’s been undoubtedly one of the best 5s in the league this season, and is part of why Cleveland has the league’s fourth-best defensive rating this campaign. Rookie Evan Mobley is part of the reasoning for that too, along with others.
Circling back to the All-Star front, though, it’s really cool that Cleveland is hosting the All-Star festivities this year, particularly with it being a resurgent season for the Cavs.
In any case, with that as the backdrop, and with the Cavaliers having two All-Stars of their own this year, it’ll be nice to see prominent Cavs players of other eras reminisce on their time with the Wine and Gold, as we’ve seen some of throughout the year. And one Cavs legend, in Brad Daugherty, flashed back to his prior All-Star days repping the Wine and Gold, also with former teammate and fellow Cavs great, Mark Price.
Daugherty recently tweeted this out, regarding All-Star memories of his own, which was awesome to see, as him and Price were two of the best Cavaliers players in the club’s history, and they’ve always been such staunch supporters of the team.
This was cool to see from Daugherty, especially with the Cavs set to host All-Star Weekend.
Daugherty and Price made five and four All-Star teams in their time with the Cavaliers, and in that ’92 season, both were All-NBA Third Team.
In that campaign, Daugherty had 21.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and a career-best 1.1. blocks per contest. Price had 17.3 points, 7.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game, and led the league in free throw shooting with a clip of 94.7 percent, the first of three times he did that in his career. Price is third in NBA history in free throw shooting percentage, at 90.4 percent, among qualified players.
Generally, this tweet from Daugherty was a cool rewind to All-Star memories for him and Price, and with Cleveland hosting the All-Star festivities this year, it was nice to see from one of the best players in Cavaliers history. Daugherty and Price were two of the best at their respective positions in the history of the Wine and Gold, and I’d put Daugherty at the top among 5s.
In regards to the All-Star Weekend ahead, Cavs wing Isaac Okoro and big Evan Mobley will compete in the Clorox Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night for Team Barry, and Darius Garland, Mobley and Jarrett Allen will compete in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge on Saturday night, for the Cavs’ element. Those events tipoff at 9 PM EST (Rising Stars) and 8 PM EST.
Garland and Allen will look to make a splash on the national stage again in the All-Star Game on Sunday night, and in the league’s 75th season, it’s neat that the league will be honoring the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team during halftime of the All-Star Game. The NBA honored its 50th Anniversary back during the last time Cleveland hosted All-Star Weekend in 1997, so this is in-line with that tribute as well.
So as Daugherty would relay himself, enjoy the festivities, Cavs fans!
