3 buyout candidates for the Cavs to consider signing: Gary Harris

There was a time just a couple of seasons ago when Gary Harris was looked at as a star role player, the perfect wingman to Nikola Jokic. Then injuries and ice-cold shooting knocked him down a few pegs, and the Denver Nuggets used him as matching salary in the Aaron Gordon trade at least season’s trade deadline.

Fast forward a year, and Harris has had a solid bounceback season. He is hitting 38 percent of his 3-pointers this season and 44.2 percent from the field overall, leading to a 54.1 percent effective field goal percentage that is his highest since 2017-18. He has always been and continues to be a solid defender on the wing, a player marrying Isaac Okoro‘s defensive impact with the floor-spacing of a true 3-and-D wing.

If Harris wants to compete for a winning team and also maximize his earnings, the Cavs can offer more than most other teams. It’s possible he returns to the Denver Nuggets or picks a team like the Utah Jazz or Brooklyn Nets, but the Cavs are not a bad landing spot for a player who grew up in Indiana and played college ball at Michigan State.

Harris, Dragic and McLemore are just three of a number of players likely to be available in the buyout market this season. The Cavs will almost certainly make a play for one or two buyout players. Will they look for another point guard, a shooting wing or a backup big? For the first time in a long time, they may have the luxury of picking from multiple options willing to come and compete in Cleveland.
