3 trades the Cavs can still make before trade deadline
Trade No. 1: Backup PG
The Cleveland Cavaliers made an immediate move to slap a band-aid on the backup point guard position in the wake of Ricky Rubio’s injury, trading Denzel Valentine for Rajon Rondo. The former All-Star has been a decent passer, as expected, but has largely underwhelmed in every other facet with the Cavs. He has been fine, but the Cavs may want to chase something more than fine.
One such option would be Dennis Schroder, who took a one-year make-good contract with the Boston Celtics this past summer. He hasn’t gelled with the Celtics and is largely thought to be available, and making just $5.9 million means it’s easy enough to match enough of his salary.
In the above configuration, the Cavs move Rondo and acknowledge that things just aren’t working with Dylan Windler in Cleveland. He still offers a tantalizing package of skill, however, and another team may like to take a swing that he will get healthy and put it together.
Boston reuniting with Rondo towards the end of his career would be intriguing, and perhaps mend some broken fences. Windler probably has enough value to stand in for a second-round pick here to make it worth the Celtics’ style.
