Examining the role for Cavs potential trade target Buddy Hield
How would Hield fit in Cleveland?
Recent speculations in the NBA rumor mill have indicated that the Kings seem to be prepared to move on from Buddy Hield. However, it might not be that easy for the Cavs to snag him. With three years left on his contract, Hield is set to make roughly $22 million this year.
Realistically, if the Cavs are serious about landing Buddy Hield in a trade before the deadline, they are going to have to be comfortable with moving on from the Rubio’s deal in that sense, filler and draft capital package we suggested, with potentially multiple seconds or a lottery-protected first. Would Cleveland alternatively deal Lauri Markkanen and/or Cedi Osman as an aside? It’s tough to say, and would Sacramento be interested? Who knows.
In any case, it’s reportedly a priority for Cleveland, regarding potential trades, that moves don’t heavily jeopardize team chemistry; a big shakeup isn’t likely to play out. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, as well as the Cavs front office, are aware of just how crucial a team’s chemistry can be to its overall success. Buddy Hield is 29 years old, which would make him one of the older Cavaliers if he was brought onto the roster.
Personally, I believe the Cavs have done an exceptional job of amassing young talent through the draft and trades. So bringing in a nearly-30-year-old Hield should not disrupt the team’s youth movement. In fact, having more of a veteran presence that can play the wing, or provide more guard depth for Cleveland would be advantageous for this team. Especially if they have their eyes set on the postseason.
Could Buddy Hield fit on this Cavs’ team? Absolutely – at face value he provides this team an answer to some of their most glaring questions. A knockdown shooter that can play at the wing spot, whilst providing depth in the guard rotation as well.
Looking further beyond, Hield could be a valuable veteran component for this Cavs team as they continue to battle their way to the top of the Eastern Conference.
