Should Cavs consider this trade with PHI proposed by The Sixer Sense?
By Dan Gilinsky
The Cleveland Cavaliers have done as well as anybody would’ve expected this season, as they’re 29-19 on the season, and are currently fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. This deep in the season, with the club’s schedule in the first third of it, and with the injuries/COVID-19-related absences the Cavaliers have had, that deserves a round of applause.
As we noted though, the Cavs have had their share of injuries this season, like many teams around the league, and Cleveland not having the likes of Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio the rest of the way, particularly with the postseason push ahead, hurts.
Along with that, it was tough to see Lauri Markkanen sustain a high ankle sprain in the Cavs’ win against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, and the team is reportedly expecting him to be out for “a while.”
That’s unfortunate, as Markkanen had really been getting going offensively; the beat will have to go on, though, and guys such as Dean Wade, Lamar Stevens and others will have to step up. Cleveland will lean on its defense, anyhow.
Nonetheless, it is apparent that the Cavs could very well be seeking backcourt and/or offensive help here, and the trade deadline is approaching on Feb. 10. In that realm, rumored potential targets such as Buddy Hield, Caris LeVert, Terrence Ross, Eric Gordon and Kyle Anderson could seemingly be players that could be in-play for the Cavaliers.
The Cavs are reportedly seeking out potential trades centered on dealing the expiring contract of Rubio and draft picks, and Sexton, who’s set to be a restricted free agent this coming season, could be a player that could maybe be dealt. We’ll keep on the lookout for that.
Circling back to possible trade targets, though, while I’d be much more on-board with Hield, Ross, or Anderson, in terms of wings/offensive help, should Cleveland have interest in taking on Tobias Harris, a name who has been involved in rumors of late?
The Cavs before have been a club linked to Ben Simmons, but to me, that one would be a complete no-no, given his lack of shooting, and I wouldn’t be banking on drastic improvement there from him, nor would I want his deal. That said, perhaps Cleveland could be involved in a multi-team deal with the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings, a club that is reportedly open to trading Tobias Harris, too, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
When it comes to Simmons, it was recently reported by Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic and Stadium (subscription required) that the Sixers’ brass is leaning toward a Simmons trade in the upcoming summer, for what it’s worth. Philly is hopeful they can land James Harden in a potential deal, but he is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, so who knows on that sign-and-trade front.
As an aside, though, in terms of a hypothetical just involving the Cavaliers and Sixers, it was somewhat noteworthy to me, that Lucas Johnson of The Sixer Sense, suggested the following deal involving Harris. That’s even with me having my reservations.
Should the Cavs consider the above suggested trade with the Sixers?
We’ll dive into it from here, starting with the Philadelphia side first, and then eventually getting into the verdict, from Cleveland’s side of things.
