The Cleveland Cavaliers don’t need to rush things. This season has been wildly surprising, a jaunt up the standings from the cellar. The core of the Cavs is extremely young, and mortgaging the future to win more games this season is unnecessary. They can play the long game.

What is also true is that the Eastern Conference is more vulnerable than it has been in a while, and the Cavs’ underlying metrics suggest it is among those teams with a legitimate shot at winning the East. They have multiple players on expiring contracts on their roster who aren’t going to play for the rest of the season; could the Cavs make any moves at the trade deadline to help them this season and beyond?

The Cavs can push some chips into the middle to improve this season; can the Kings provide help via trade?

The answer is yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean they should accept the first offer bandied their way. They can afford to be choosy, as there shouldn’t be much pressure internal your externally. Yet for the right deal, they can start to leverage their assets to make an improvement.

One team that should be selling at the trade deadline is the Sacramento Kings, who are increasingly likely to extend their postseason drought this year. They have a number of talented veterans on reasonable contracts that they can move for value in order to reload for next season. Who should the Cavs look at as potentially available in such a deal, and what should the trades themselves look like?
