Cavs story #1: Evan Mobley sets rebounding mark

Evan Mobley is an absolute joy to watch. His old-school approach to the game, his ability to create on the offensive side of the ball, and then the fear he puts in his opponents as they try and score around him when he’s defending is fun to witness. The high release and ease when he puts up outside jumpers is so impressive. We don’t see that type of style and smoothness from 7-foot big men much these days. When he hits a corner three from the baseline in the fourth quarter of last night’s game it was like, “wow”.

He’s only 20 years old. He’s doing things in this game that no one has done before and at such a young age. He leads several categories in rookie NBA stats, including rebounds and scoring average.

Last night he scored 15 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds. To know all of what Mobley is doing now will only get better in years to come is scary good to consider. And the demeanor that Mobley has is what is setting him apart from the other young talent in the league.

There’s no worry in his play when he’s out on the court. There are no rushing shots or panic. He seems to usually make the right decision to either attack to the rim and draw contact or get a layup or take that smooth jumper from the outside if that’s what the defense is giving him.

We can only look forward to the next game to see what amazing thing Mobley does and that’s fun to think about.
