Three blockbuster Collin Sexton trade scenarios for the Cavs
Collin Sexton is coming off of a productive individual season, averaging over 24 points per game on 47.5 percent from the field. Still, many call into question how well he fits with guard Darius Garland. Garland has improved at a rapid rate since he’s entered the NBA, and he deserves an All-Star nod this season. He is averaging 19.5 points per game and leading the Cavaliers to the 5 seed despite the roster being riddled with injuries.
However, due to lack of size, the star guard duo’s fit defensively is a difficult one. Sexton and Garland are both six-foot-one inch, making them one of the smallest backcourts in the league. With Garland being better offensively and improving at a quicker rate, despite being younger than Sexton, he is clearly the piece to build around along with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley going forward.
Darius Garland and Collin Sexton make an awkward fit. With Sexton out for the year, what should the Cavs do with the gifted guard to maximize their long-term roster?
Collin Sexton has shown a lot of promise as a young player, only just turning 23, and has been the most consistent scorer for Cleveland, averaging 20 points per game since he’s entered the league. However, there are pieces that have rapidly overtaken Sexton for the top role on the team and should be the pieces to focus on for the Cavaliers.
Sexton, however great at scoring, does have some unfortunate shortcomings, those being his defense and his playmaking ability. That combination makes it difficult to build a team-oriented system involving him. Unfortunately, Sexton has limited trade value due to his torn meniscus., which is poor timing due to the fact that he passed on a large contract extension this past offseason and is set to become a restricted free agent in this upcoming free agency period.
That doesn’t mean Sexton can’t be traded. Let’s take a look at some trade scenarios that may put Cleveland in a spot to contend as soon as this year.
