The Cavs’ Ricky Rubio question: Final Thoughts

There isn’t a clear-cut answer here, but given the way the Cavs are playing recently and how long it has been since they have had a good team, it seems unlikely the front office would move Rubio as long as the team is winning. If they falter and slide back down the standings then a trade becomes more palatable.

The question of extending vs waiting is a trickier one to predict and depends on both parties. Is Rubio content getting long-term security at the cost of a starting role? He seems to enjoy being a part of this team, and his injury history might lead him to sign an extension at a lower number.

The Cavs could also easily decide to wait the season out ahead of an expensive offseason. Rubio and Collin Sexton will be free agents, and Darius Garland will be up for an extension. Waiting until the summer gives them the most possible information before allocating funds.

Whatever happens, the play of Rubio thus far has boosted this team in the standings and given them a valuable asset. If they trade him they will get solid value; if they extend him they will have locked up a solid veteran. Regardless of their decision there probably won’t be much movement until close to the trade deadline in February, giving the Cavs time to make their decision and see how the league around them plays.
