Cavs: Why isn’t there a timeline on Sexton’s injury?
Cavs: What if Sexton has his meniscus repaired?
The other option for Collin Sexton is to have his meniscus repaired, which would mean suturing the cartilage back together so that it would heal and preserve the meniscus. Repairing the meniscus is the best scenario for the knee long-term, as you maintain as much of the shock-absorbing cartilage as possible. This helps to prevent wear on the knee and decreases the likelihood of successive knee injuries in the future.
Because Sexton in this scenario would need to allow time for his meniscus to heal after the surgery, the recovery time would be significantly longer. Jaren Jackson Jr. suffered a torn meniscus in the NBA Bubble and had it repaired, and he did not return for nine months. James Wiseman tore his meniscus last year during his rookie season, and while he is nearing a return, seven months later he is not yet cleared for 5-on-5 play.
Rushing back too early from a meniscus repair would probably be the worst scenario, so hopefully if Sexton goes this route he will take the time to recover. Taking that time, however, could mean he misses most or possibly all of the rest of the season. Can he afford to do that, hitting restricted free agency without any further demonstration of what he can offer on the court?
A healthy Sexton didn’t get the number he wanted in a contract extension, and surely he planned to prove on the court that he was worth more. That hasn’t happened yet, and now he has to weigh whether it’s worth it to hurry back. Is it riskier to go into free agency not having played in eight months, or to come back and possibly play worse as Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland supplant him in the pecking order? It’s a tough decision.
News has to be coming soon on whether Sexton will attempt to get back onto the court without surgery, or if he is pursuing either the trim or the repair, and the timetable should be built from there. The question is whether he returns to find a roster that has moved on, or one that welcomes him back in desperate need of his scoring? Get healthy, Young Bull.
