Cavs: One stud and one dud from win over Hornets on Monday
Cavs dud: Three-point shooting
One thing that has bugged the Cavaliers all season, and did as well last season, is three-point shooting. The Cavs are once again at the bottom of the league (27th) in three-point shooting, hitting them only at a 30.2 percent clip.
With how important shooting has become in the NBA, this is a statistic that can come back and bite the Cavs in the long run. Lauri Markkanen, who has surprised a lot of people with his play thus far, shot 2-of-8 from deep last night, failing to improve upon his 28 percent three-point shooting this year.
The scariest part of this trend early on, is that guards Darius Garland and Collin Sexton are also not shooting well from deep. Last night they combined to go 2-of-11 from three-point range.
Garland is currently shooting 30.6 percent from three, while Sexton is shooting a disgusting 24.2 percent from deep. Markkanen is always going to take his shot when it’s open, which I don’t really have a problem with. His shooting should improve throughout the year. Unfortunately, if Garland and Sexton don’t start shooting better, it’s going to be really hard for the Cavaliers to stay close in a lot of games.
With all that being said, let’s all give a small “golf-clap” to Cedi Osman, who seems to be the only one on the team with a pulse from three-point range. He was 4-of-5 from deep last night and is shooting a scorching 48.4 percent from deep this year. Overall, as a team the Cavs need to just shoot better.
Now, this team is still very young, and has a lot of good players. So while the three-point shooting needs to improve, the young squad is looking good in the beginning of the season. Unsurprisingly, “Tower City” is leading the way.
