Why would the Hawks trade Reddish?

Around the draft, rumors started to swirl that the Hawks were looking to move Reddish in an attempt to move up in the draft but why? Reddish has the potential to be an elite 3-and-D player and more if his on-ball offensive game takes the leap that many believe ir can.

The reasoning is simple. Can the Hawks pay everyone, and can he establish consistency? A recent report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto made it appear Reddish could be had, and one would imagine the Hawks attempting a financial “reset”, looking at players with more years on their contract at a cheaper cost to improve flexibility.

Reddish is extension-eligible this offseason but so far the Hawks have already given out check-book-breaking extensions to Trae Young and John Collins. Kevin Huerter and Clint Capela received sizeable extensions as well.

Danilo Gallinari and Bogdan Bogdanovic’s contracts are up within the next couple of seasons but will they let two vital parts of their success walk? De’Andre Hunter is extension-eligible this offseason as well and one would think the Hawks prioritize him over Reddish, right?

Not to mention the Hawks used a sixth overall pick on Onyeka Okongwu just a season ago so what’s the outcome with him? Spending a top-20 pick on Jalen Johnson, is the writing on the wall for Reddish’s future?

The Hawks have a lot of questions to answer and face an issue that the Cavs may have to handle as well. There are too many young players to pay and considering how big of a run Atlanta was able to make with Reddish sidelined, it makes sense why a move is talked about.
