Cavs: Full roster of players – Expected Starters

Darius Garland (PG)

One of the top candidates to take a huge leap forward this season, Darius Garland missed most of his freshman season at Vanderbilt due to injury, an injury that likely slowed his impact as a rookie as well. Last year he took a big step forward, and if he does that again this year he could become the centerpiece of this team for years to come.

Collin Sexton (SG)

Collin Sexton already took a big leap, increasing his scoring average to 24.3 points per game last year. Can he improve the other areas of his game to better impact winning? Scoring when the defense is keyed against you is perhaps the most valuable skill in the league, but if the former Alabama guard can become a better off-ball player it will go a long way towards earning him a sizable contract next summer.

Isaac Okoro (SF)

The athleticism and defense of Isaac Okoro is perhaps unmatched on this roster, as he is a special player physically on the wing. At the same time all of the concerns for Okoro coming out of Auburn as still present a season later: that he might grow into an elite wing defender, but he will be nearly unplayable on offense. Hopefully, this preseason can immediately behind to provide hope in improvement.

Evan Mobley (PF)

Evan Mobley was a marvel at USC, the team’s best offensive and defensive players at the same time. He went No. 3 in the 2021 NBA Draft to the Cavs, who are getting a player with truly unique two-way upside. Mobley will likely start at the 4, and from there look to grow his perimeter game as a rookie before sliding more and more to center as he gains strength and weight.

Jarrett Allen (C)

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded a first-round pick last season for Jarrett Allen, who spent the first three seasons of his career with the Brooklyn Nets team that drafted him in 2017. He is large and strong, an excellent rebounder and rim protector. Offensively he’s a roll guy, not a pop guy, and will never be a high-usage option. His new $100 million contract will hopefully age well, because the team is only going to get more expensive as the young talent gets older.

There you have it, all 20 players on the team with a brief blurb about each. This roster contains a lot of production, a lot of potential, and ultimately a number of players who will have to be cut loose. For now they will compete in training camp to see what the future holds.
