Cavs: Best-case scenario for Collin Sexton in 2021-22

Collin Sexton increased his per-game scoring average by 4.1 points from his first to his second season, and then again by another 3.5 points between years two and three. If he does something similar he could be averaging 28 points per game next year, a high number but not one completely unreasonable for Sexton to reach.

The increased attention on Sexton would only open up passing lanes all the more, and as a college point guard it’s possible he finally breaks through to taking the leap as a distributor as well. 28 points per game on solid efficiency is valuable, but 28 points and six assists is the kind of ascension the Cavs are looking for to invest in.

Let’s see how this plays out. Sexton is balling out from the jump, helping the Cavs to a handful of upsets and keeping them a game or two above .500 all the way through to Christmas. Sexton is dropping 28 points per game, hitting 40 percent of his 3-pointers, and dishing out six assists per game.

That leads to Sexton making his first career All-Star Game, representing Cleveland as its first All-Star in four seasons. With a renewed determination to help his team win and to emulate those stars he was around at All-Star Weekend he turns up the intensity on defense, averaging a career-best 1.7 steals per game and keying a devastating transition attack.

The Cavs finish with an unexpectedly high 40-42 record and make the play-in tournament, earning some valuable postseason experience for the young core and setting them up for even more success next year. The Cavs gladly ink Sexton to a max contract the minute free agency begins.
