Cavs: 3 reasons for optimism about Collin Sexton’s future – Yearly Improvement

Collin Sexton has played three seasons in the NBA after playing just one year at Alabama. He stepped into the league and immediately began scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game and quickly becoming a starter. From there he only continued to improve, averaging 20.8 points in his second season. Moving to the 2-guard position last year he blossomed even further, dropping 24.3 points per game.

Sexton’s growth has been as more than a scorer, too. Last year he met or exceeded career-best numbers in effective field goal percentage, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. He took the most shots of his career but also hit them at a higher clip, balancing a slight dip in his 3-point percentage with better finishing inside.

Every report about Sexton is that he applies his ferocious energy and competitiveness we see on the court to training off the court as well. He puts in the time to get better, and the results have been shown on the court.

If the expectation is that Sexton will continue to improve, that his worth ethic and talent support the belief that his growth curve will continue at a sharp angle, then it is much more palatable to pay Sexton at or near the max on his next contract, and to make him a central part of the team moving forward.
