The basketball world is split on Collin Sexton. Some see his prolific scoring numbers and see a future star. Others are convinced they’re empty calories. The Cleveland Cavaliers have to make a decision in the next year about whether they want to pay Sexton to keep him as a part of this core, and they’re clearly conflicted on the decision as well.

The Cavs could extend Sexton up to the start of the season, his fourth in the league. If they do not, then he will hit restricted free agency next summer. Is Sexton, the first Top 10 pick drafted to kick off their current rebuild, the right fit for their young core? Will he develop into a more complete player, or are the weaknesses in his game here to stay?

There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of his fit alongside Darius Garland in the backcourt, and to think the Cavs should move Sexton rather than pay him market value. Setting those aside for now, what reasons are there to be optimistic about Sexton’s future?

Sexton was a top-20 scorer in the league last year in just his third season. He has the loyalty of many fans, he’s a hard worker and he’s still very young.
