Cavs: Ranking the 5 best 3-point shooters on the roster – Collin Sexton
Collin Sexton has not been the tough defensive guard that many expected he would be coming into the league. He absolutely plays with a high motor, but he’s not a TJ McConnell-type on-ball irritant, and he easily gets blown by when defending fast guards.
On the other hand, it was expected that Sexton would be a mediocre shooter who would need time to develop into someone reliable on that end. To Sexton’s credit that simply has not been the case, as he hit 40.2 percent of his 3-pointers as a rookie. He has stayed above average the past two seasons, but that number has tracked down to land at 37.1 last season. His expanding role as a shot creator means more of those shots are unassisted, which are generally more difficult shots to hit and thus produce a lower median shooting percentage.
Can Sexton reverse the trend and get back to a 40 percent shooter? That would help Sexton with one of the biggest issues with his game, namely the lack of scalability. Whether it’s the Cavs or another team paying him his next contract, the question is whether Sexton’s offensive game can easily plug into other lineups where he may not have the ball in his hands as much. If he is a 40 percent shooter he is much more of a threat even without the ball.
