Cavs: FA Garrison Mathews could bring shooting pop off bench
By Dan Gilinsky
Mathews could build on his past season’s success with the Wizards, but would also be a bargain Cavs signing
Regardless of Isaac Okoro hopefully progressing as a shooter/secondary playmaker, this Cavs team could use a knockdown rotational shooter to help Darius Garland and Collin Sexton in that way, and if signed by Cleveland, Mathews could very well fit that bill.
I wouldn’t expect him at 6-foot-5 to play with the SexLand duo much, but him, Sexton and perhaps Ricky Rubio could still be impactful in stretches for the Cavs at times throughout games. Those three could mesh with a number of 4-5 combinations for Cleveland, too.
In regards to a potential deal for Mathews, perhaps a bit more than a minimum deal would do the trick via part of the bi-annual exception, as Cornelissen stated. I wouldn’t expect it to be for multiple years, either way.
In any case, given what he showed last season, and promising shooting in 2019-20 when given chances for the Wizards, Mathews could be a nice bargain free agency addition by the Cavaliers from a bench shooting standpoint.
If needed because of injuries, Mathews could seemingly be a capable spot starter on occasion as well. And generally, I do foresee the to-be 25-year-old (before next season) being a quality rotational contributor from here, and sticking in the league.
