The Cleveland Cavaliers have made the decision to sit out the first week of free agency. Other than re-signing center Jarrett Allen to a long-term deal, the Cavs have watched the entire league dish out wheelbarrows of money to available players.

One player who has been left out in the cold without his wheelbarrow of money has been free agent point guard Dennis Schroder. The Los Angeles Lakers traded for Shroder last offseason with the intention of signing him to a long-term deal, but he turned down the Lakers’ offer, reportedly around four years and $84 million.

The Cavs’ patience means they are still armed with their full mid-level exception, and with money around the league dried up that could be the largest offer Schroder receives. Should they make a move to acquire the big-name free agent?

While the Cavs should also pursue talent, this would be a mistake. No matter the price the Cleveland Cavaliers should absolutely not sign Dennis Schroder.

Dennis Schroder is a talented player who had something of a “breakout” season in Oklahoma City two seasons ago, parlaying that production to land on the Lakers last year. A good point-of-attack defender, Schroder thought highly of his shot-creation but the basket didn’t think highly of him, and he shot just 43.7 percent from the field last year and 33.5 percent from 3-point range.

Schroder might be a decent rental for another team in the league, even if it’s unlikely he returns to the Los Angeles Lakers given their acquisition of Russell Westbrook and lack of prioritization of bringing him back. Even if desperation has Schroder sign for a deal under $10 million, likely for one year, the Cavs should stay away. Here are two reasons why.
