Cavs Summer League Player Introductions: The Lottery Picks

Evan Mobley, Big

The 7′ tall Evan Mobley comes to the Cavs by way of the University of Southern California, where he starred as a highly-recruited freshman. Mobley led the Trojans all the way to the Elite Eight as he was exceptionally dominant. His length and defensive instincts should make him a difference-maker from day one.

Mobley will have a learning curve, as all prospects do, but in the environment of NBA Summer League he should excel. He will have a chance to show off his ball-handling skills and shooting, and he should have a few highlight-reel blocks ready to unleash.

Isaac Okoro, Wing

Isaac Okoro missed out on a Summer League experience last year as the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He therefore heads to Vegas with 2,173 NBA minutes already under his belt. The Cavs took him fifth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft after a freshman year at Auburn where he was the best perimeter defender in the SEC.

Okoro’s floor is tied to his defense, and while he struggled as a rookie it was largely because he was taking on each team’s best perimeter scorer as a teenager; his defense should be fine, and it should result in some turnovers in Vegas.

The question for Okoro is his ceiling: can he shoot the basketball. If he can develop as a secondary ball-handler and cutter that will help, but whether or not Okoro is worth his draft slot is based on whether his shot comes around. Summer League will be our chance to check in on his progress.
