Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 reasons now is the time to trade Collin Sexton
3 reasons now is the time to trade Collin Sexton: The league is interested in him now
Collin Sexton scored 24.3 points per game last season on solid efficiency. He has increased his scoring average significantly every year of his young career, showing a linear (and upwards) pattern of growth. His locked-in work ethic and on-court intensity are obvious to outsiders and clear positives in projecting him moving forward.
NBA teams need guards who can score, and that gives Sexton a lot of value. Many of these teams have the defensive insulation already in place to protect Sexton’s shortcomings. They are also more ready to compete, making it more palatable to pay him in free agency next summer than for the rebuilding Cavaliers to do so.
Cleveland isn’t peddling him to an ambivalent league, either. There is reportedly interest from a number of teams, many of them in playoff contention but needing another piece to try and push them up a tier.
The most prominent trade suitor has been the New York Knicks, who need another shot creator alongside Julius Randle and seemingly always get involved in discussions for high-scoring guards. The Miami Heat likewise call about any and all players and need to make a move of some sort after being swept in the first round of the playoffs.
The Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors and a number of other teams could all get into the mix, and they have very different trade packages to offer. The difficult part for any of those teams looking to upgrade is that there are not a lot of high-quality options available in free agency. That means teams looking to make a change have to explore the trade market, and despite rumors around players like Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal, Sexton may be the best available on the market.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a valuable trade chip on their hands, even if he won’t net a superstar return. They could wait to move him, and that patience could pay off. Yet looking at the current roster, where this team wants to go and the state of the league as a whole, now is the time to make a move.
The Cavaliers should trade Collin Sexton for the best available package, and they should do it now.
