Cavs NBA Draft: Jonathan Kuminga is intriguing, but at #3? Come on
By Dan Gilinsky
The Cavs spot at #3 would be simply too high for Kuminga
He can create for himself off the bounce as a driver, but while the shot has made progress, it’s going to likely be a while before Kuminga can be a floor spacing presence.
The catch-and-shoot viability for him is going to take time, and though he is likely further along offensively than Isaac Okoro was coming into the past draft and could feasibly take his starting 3 spot later on and/or going into his second season, it’s tough to foresee the role for him early.
Kuminga could mesh with the likes of Darius Garland, Collin Sexton, if he’s around, and Kevin Love (if he’s around)/Dean Wade/Jarrett Allen, but unlike Mobley, Kuminga is not much of a passer, and until he proves viable as a shooter, will have an inconsistent offensive impact.
And in particular, if the Cavs do end up trading Sexton, who is their best scorer by far, and especially in the potential case for a New York Knicks pick as part of a return, which is part of a reported option for Collin from them, it’d likely only make things tougher for Kuminga.
Now in that case, at #19 overall, I do like Cameron Thomas, Trey Murphy III and/or Jared Butler; however, they/nor a free agency target at the 2 would have near the scoring abilities of Sexton early on. The same would likely go for Brandon Boston Jr. or Ayo Dosunmu, even with me being a fan of Boston as a potential trade target via late-first for Cleveland.
