Cavs: The ceiling of Jalen Suggs

If you are unfamiliar with Jalen Suggs, you might remember him from his buzzer-beater shot against UCLA that ultimately sent his Bulldogs to the national championship. Suggs and the Gonzaga team were only one win away from an undefeated season this year, and one win away from claiming the  NCAA title.

However, the Baylor Bears would ultimately walk away the victors. Despite Gonzaga falling short in that final game, Suggs is still shaping up to be a proven NBA talent.

Suggs comes into the league at 6-foot-4 with an average of 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He is considered among many to be one of the top four talents in this draft class. There is no denying Suggs has the capability to be a star player in the NBA.

Seeing as during his first and only year at Gonzaga, he shot 58.8 percent from the two, and 33.7 percent from three-point land. Suggs can also contribute defensively as well, given that he averaged 1.9 steals per game and demonstrated impressive instincts on that end, while also using his athleticism to lock down rival guards.

Whoever takes him would be getting an effective two-way guard and potentially dominant playmaker with Jalen Suggs on their team. The tempo and speed of this league would serve an instant impact player like Suggs well.

Now, that is not to say the Cavaliers should take Suggs with their third pick. Jalen Suggs would be a quality playmaker, yes that is true, but Cleveland already has their franchise playmaker in Darius Garland, along with another ball-dominant player in Sexton. Adding a third guard that requires the ball constantly would create confusion in Cleveland’s lineup.

Granted, maybe Sexton would end up eventually being dealt, but with what he’s already shown and him still just 22, Cleveland shouldn’t just jump at doing that in that sense.

Anyway, in the NBA overall, Suggs’ ceiling is that of a potential All-Star-level guard on a starting lineup. As far as Suggs’ ceiling with the Cavs, as the team is currently constructed, he would seemingly currently be a backup guard behind Garland or Sexton.

Could that change? Sure, but some ways into the next season.

And generally, with Cleveland already having two ball-dominant guards, it would make little sense for Suggs to join the roster, barring a trade. We’ll have to see regarding that, though.

Next, let’s talk about the big man out of USC, Evan Mobley.
