Cavs: 2 reasons Collin Sexton sets tone for foreseeable future
By Dan Gilinsky
#1: The Cavs know what they’re getting
The vast majority of the time, Sexton’s going to do his thing. He’s increased his scoring output from 16.7 as a rookie to 20.8 to 24.4 points per outing this season for Cleveland, and he’s made strides as a finisher, and has typically been a reliable three-point shooter off-the-catch.
He has shown pull-up deep shooting abilities, too, although this season it hasn’t been the case nearly as often. But the lack of spacing around him/Garland for much of the season hasn’t aided Collin in that way, admittedly.
In any case, with what Sexton provides from a game-to-game standpoint as an all-around scorer, even with such glaring inconsistencies around him, it makes him a tone-setting-type guy for Cleveland.
With hopefully the Cavaliers being able to put more pieces around Sexton, such as by way of the 2021 NBA Draft, where Cleveland should have a very high pick, and/or free agency, that’d only make Sexton more dangerous, too. I’d expect that to play out, at least via the draft, with perhaps a player such as Scottie Barnes aiding him, or maybe Jalen Green or Jonathan Kuminga/Moses Moody.
To drive it home though, with what Sexton provides night-to-night, he’ll be a key leadership presence looking onward, and the Cavs being able to count on him speaks volumes. That will set the tone for others and particularly for younger guys, but also key pieces such as Jarrett Allen, Garland and Isaac Okoro, who is showing encouraging signs offensively.
Even with the Cavs being so banged up/injury-riddled to close the season here, and having lost 11 straight games, I’m not glossing over what Sexton’s been doing, and him having been so durable shouldn’t be taken for granted, either.
That leads to the next point.
