Cavs: Collin Sexton’s amid another 20-plus-point run, keeps rolling along
By Dan Gilinsky
The Cleveland Cavaliers have rebounded pretty well here heading into the All-Star break, having won four of five, with Wednesday having been a close loss to the Indiana Pacers.
And although he did have a few rough outings, in particular, in Cleveland’s brutal February stretch, which included a 10-game losing streak, against mostly postseason hopefuls, Collin Sexton has mostly gotten himself right. Other Cavs players, seemingly have, too.
Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen have continued to do their thing, and it’s been nice to see Isaac Okoro and Dylan Windler play with more confidence it appears as of late.
Granted, Garland did have to leave in the mid-third quarter in Cleveland’s last loss against the Indiana Pacers due to a left groin strain, which played into the Cavaliers blowing a then-17-point lead at that point.
Garland unfortunately had a groin strain, leading him to miss Cleveland’s last five games of 2019-20 leading into the-then hiatus/end of season for the Cavs, albeit the All-Star break should hopefully aid Garland in that realm. We’ll see on him, anyhow.
With Sexton, although he and the Cavs had their turnover issues against T.J. McConnell and Indy, if the Cavs were able to get Garland back, and Larry Nance Jr. seemingly, to go with perhaps Kevin Love and/or Matthew Dellavedova fairly soon post-All-Star, that’d be big.
In any case, Sexton’s again seemingly rebounded for the most part.
And while the Cavs’ injuries have played into it a bit, as well as Andre Drummond having been sitting while Cleveland reportedly seeks a trade for him, and you can view reports/rumors about him, potentially Cedi Osman, Taurean Prince and JaVale McGee here, Sexton has been hot.
He set a Cavs record when he had 20-plus points in each of his first 10 games active of this season, and Sexton is currently amid another going-on 10-game streak of hitting that mark. The Cavs did lose narrowly to Indiana on Wednesday, but Sexton did have 10 first half assists, and had 32 points.
Sexton just keeps rolling along for the Cavs, and should finish strong.
Sexton looks to be cruising along in the scoring sense, and in this 10-game binge for him, he’s had 27.1 points per outing on 49.1 percent shooting.
Sexton’s been able to get to his spots, but has also hit a pretty respectable 36.5 percent of his 5.2 three-points per outing in that span, and ideally, perhaps Cleveland can generate some more catch-and-shoot perimeter looks for Collin in coming games post-All-Star.
We’ve seen glimpses of that with him coming off off-ball screens, and particularly with Nance’s screening timing in that regard, he could help in that realm when he’s back for Collin, perhaps Garland a bit and/or Dylan Windler.
Anyway, in this latest 10-game 20-plus-point streak, it’s been a positive to see Sexton utilize his change of pace on-ball, with hesitations leading to some pull-ups, and for him to counter that by taking on/initiating contact. He’s had 7.3 free throw attempts per game in this stretch, of which he’s hit 79.5 percent of his attempts.
And looking onward, I look for that to be a crucial element for him the rest of the season/in the near future as well.
Moreover, while Sexton would benefit from some more help to come hopefully for the Cavaliers, and I personally believe a potential Tomas Satoransky trade addition would make a difference for him/Garland, Collin is chugging along, regardless. I’d expect him to continue to make his presence felt as a big-time bucket-getter in the second half of the season for the Wine and Gold.
It does seem as though Sexton could very well be extended this upcoming offseason, which reportedly is seemingly a scenario that will play out. We’ll ultimately have to see, also factoring in Jarrett Allen, too.
Collin has been in a really nice rhythm, for the most part, lately, anyway, as this latest 20-plus-point streak has shown, and while we’ll have to see if he can keep it going, I’d expect him to close out the season strong.
