Examining Dotson’s game so far

Cleveland had a quiet free agency period during the offseason, although one of the players that did sign here would go on to be a key component to the success of the team when their roster was deprived of any of their starting guards. That man is Damyean Dotson.

Dotson has averaged 8.1 points per game, along with 2.4 assists per outing. For a player that has averaged only 21.7 minutes per game, those numbers are relatively decent. Dotson saw his playing time increase throughout the month of January when Sexton and Garland were both out due to injuries, and he did play a fair amount with Sexton in the fold sans Garland, anyhow.

Dotson came to Cleveland to fill a spot as a backup guard, but ended up stepping into a starting role when the team needed him. Throughout the stretch of eight games when Cleveland’s starting backcourt duo was missing and/or not playing their usual minutes-share, factoring in Garland, Dotson averaged 12.9 points per game, along with 4.1 assists, and 2.0 rebounds.

Damyean’s playmaking has been a positive contribution to the Cavs when their roster was severely depleted, and his passing/ball movement sense has been a plus, in a general sense, regardless.

While Damyean Dotson has been a reliable backup guard for Cleveland, his 3 ball requires some improvement, averaging only a 29.7 percent hit rate from beyond the arc. On the plus side, him hitting 39.6 percent hit rate on catch-and-shoot triple attempts, per NBA.com’s shot tracking data, shows he still could help the Cavs’ spacing, even.

In any case, considering that he was not expected to be a starting guard, all in all, Dotson has been a positive factor for this young Cavaliers team.

Sexton, Garland and Dotson have done a nice job, as a whole, though, so far for the Cavs, really.
