The Cleveland Cavaliers need to get pick-and-pops going
By Dan Gilinsky
These could generate nice looks for a number of Cavs players
When Love is back in the fold and/or when he’s comfortable out there, with his catch-and-shoot prowess, in instances with Darius Garland and I’d imagine Cedi Osman/Damyean Dotson, that could provide some high quality looks from deep throughout games.
It’s not just the case with Love, though. In sequences with obviously Garland on the ball initially as the delivery man, I’d like to see Cleveland utilize pick-and-pop-type plays with the likes of Dylan Windler, Taurean Prince and Osman, even. And if that means trimming down Isaac Okoro’s minutes some to help spacing to maybe 29 or so, for example, involving Windler getting more burn, that’s more than fine.
Windler and Prince have shown capability to hit perimeter looks off of movement/can coming off of off-ball screens, and I believe could fit in with Garland as occasional ball screeners, and if the looks come about/are there for Garland, he’ll be able to hit them.
Windler has hit 38.1 percent and Prince has hit 40.5 percent of his three-point attempts thus far with the Cavs, and Osman, who has shown off-movement shooting capabilities, has hit 37.0 percent from deep this season, on a robust 6.3 attempts per outing.
If the Cavs start to have some success with these pick-and-pops, which could perhaps include Larry Nance Jr. from time to time when he’s healthy, regarding his wrist sprain, later on, this should only help those in the dunker role. And the same could go for Okoro, when he’s on the floor with the Cavs featuring these, for example, in the corners.
