Cavs: 3 2021 draft prospects who would complement CLE’s young core
By Amadou Sow
The 2021 NBA Draft will be loaded, and the Cleveland Cavaliers could land a crucial contributor from that to keep pushing toward regular postseason contention.
Looking back a couple of months ago, only a select few people, if any at all, would have guessed that the Cleveland Cavaliers would be .500 through their first 10 games of the season. Even crazier, noone would have guessed that this team would have the number 1 defensive rating through the NBA’s first 10 games.
The Cavaliers have gotten to this point with gritty play and working as a collective unit and this new and improved roster can do great things together. It looks as if the sluggish Cavaliers are a thing of the past.
Even if this team ends up falling back down to earth, I think that I can speak for many fans when I say that seeing growth from this team this season has made it a blast and we can all continue to enjoy these early season surprises.
Taking a deeper look at this early season start, the young players’ that have improved have played a vital part, and more specifically, Darius Garland and Collin Sexton. This dynamic backcourt has made massive strides in their games to help the Cavaliers find success this season and look to bring excitement to this team for years to come.
And it wouldn’t seem as if both, who have been sidelined in games this week, with all of them being in Garland’s case (right shoulder sprain) and Sexton being the past two (left ankle sprain) will be sidelined for a ton longer. Garland should seemingly be back mid-next week, and we’ll see on Sexton.
Anyhow, moving past these two, Isaac Okoro has brought with him a new life to this team and his impact can be felt each and every night he’s been in. Okoro missed five games due to a left foot sprain/being placed into the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocol, but he’s been back since and has helped the team.
Pair that with the nice amount of veterans on the team and this start may not come as a surprise after all. The craziest thing is that Kevin Porter Jr. (personal) and Dylan Windler, who fractured his left hand in the first game versus the Charlotte Hornets, our other two first-round picks in the 2019 NBA Draft, have yet to really showcase their improvements themselves.
The Cavaliers still seem to be a few pieces away from comfortable playoff contention and could gain some, if not all of those pieces this offseason. This year’s offseason is supposed to be a loaded one and both the 2021 NBA Draft and free agency are expected to have a multitude of quality players.
Here, though, we’ll strictly focus on the draft and look at three 2021 prospects that would complement the Cavs’ young core.
Now, we’ll get into those.
