#3: Cavs reserve 5 man JaVale McGee

JaVale McGee was acquired recently via trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is entering new territory with a rebuilding franchise after being on championship contenders the past four seasons, two being with the Golden State Warriors and the past two with L.A., well before LeBron was banged up in 2018-19.

He brings veteran experience and solid protection at the rim, along with pick-and-roll opportunities because of his size and athleticism. But I could very well see his minutes-share being pretty minimal at the start of next season, more so.

Additionally, all players in the league who are entering this season with new teams are at a disadvantage in my opinion because of the less time they get to spend with the team before playing. We are a week away from the Cavs preseason starting, and JaVale was just traded on Nov. 22 (of which was finalized last week).

McGee is a veteran and you know what you’re getting out of him on the court, but the Cavaliers are likely to run smaller lineups and also have a lot of money already invested in three other players in the frontcourt.

With the current roster and shortened camps for players joining new teams, I expect him to start the season slowly until he finds his purpose and role with this unique roster of veterans and raw youth.
